The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has commenced investigations into the tragic shooting of a 21-year-old student in Nairobi’s Huruma area.
The victim, identified as Ms. Sheril Adhiambo, was killed on the evening of Saturday, February 7, 2026. Preliminary reports suggest the fatal shot was fired during a police pursuit of robbery suspects.
In response to the fatal shooting, IPOA deployed a Rapid Response Team from its Nairobi Regional Office on Sunday to begin a formal probe into the circumstances of the student's death.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on Sunday, 8th February 2026, deployed a Rapid Response Team from its Nairobi Regional Office to commence investigations into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on the evening of 7th February 2026 in the Huruma area of Nairobi County, in which Ms. Sheril Adhiambo, a 21-year-old student, lost her life, allegedly during a police pursuit of robbery suspects,” IPOA report read.
Sheryl Adhiambo, was a first-year student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).
According to reports, police shot her on Saturday evening as officers chased a suspected criminal when a stray bullet hit Sheryl as she went about her normal business.

Sheryl had returned home to assist her mother at a fish kiosk after completing her exams. According to her family, she didn't engage in any illegal activity.
Her mother is still having a hard time accepting the loss. She could hardly speak before sobbing when journalists spoke to her.
In a press statement released Monday, February 9 2026, IPOA Vice Chairperson Ms. Ann Wanjiku Mwangi confirmed that investigators are actively gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing forensic samples and exhibits.
The goal of the investigation is to establish the facts of the shooting and provide recommendations to the relevant authorities.
“Investigations are currently underway, with IPOA investigators actively gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analysing available samples and exhibits to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, with a view to informing subsequent recommendations to relevant agencies,” Ms. Ann Wanjiku Mwangi stated.
